Activities of the Particle Phenomenology Group

II São Paulo Particle Physics Phenomenology Workshop

This is the second workshop with the aim of gathering together the São Paulo high energy physics groups of USP, IFT-UNESP and ICTP-SAIFR. The main idea of this workshop is to give the group members of each institute the opportunity to present their past, current and future research activities. It is also a good opportunity for the newcomers to present their recent work and interests. The presentations are very informal and short (12+3min) and cover current research topics, leaving time for discussions.

Programme

The workshop is going to be held on November 25, 2016 (Friday), in Auditorio Novo 1, Instituto de Física da USP, from 10:30am to 6:00pm. The scheduled talks are listed below (click for details).

Title: Strategies for SM higher-dimensional operators searches.

Abstract: If new physics states are somewhat too heavy to be on-shell produced at the LHC, their presence is best studied using effective field theory methods and their effects at low energy can be parametrized by higher-dimensional operators. I am interested in studying the modifications that these operators induce in total and differential rates, in particular in Higgs and top-quark observables.

Title: A 2-Higgs-Doublet-singlet.

Abstract: In this work we plan to extend the SM model with a new gauge interaction U(1)_X.The minimal mode is a 2-Higgs-Doublet-Model plus a scalar singlet. It will dynamically generate a type I inverse seesaw mechanism to explain neutrino masses. We check the viability of the model using EW data constraints and show that the phase space of our model is within the 3 \sigma region of the data.

Title: The h->Z\gamma decay at the ILC.

Abstract: The study of Higgs decay into the Z\gamma pair is of special interest as it would be susceptible to new physics beyond the Standard Model. However this process is one of the hardest Higgs properties to be constrain with good precision at the LHC due large irreducible backgrounds. We investigate the precision potential of the future ILC to measure the Higgs decay into the Z\gamma pair. Towards this end, we study the associated Higgs boson production with a Z boson followed by the decay chain h->Z\gamma.

Title: Family puzzle in the Standard Model.

Abstract: The fact that the Standard Model fermions come in a family of three where each generation carries exactly the same gauge quantum numbers while differing only in their masses remain a puzzle to date. I will discuss the possibility that at a more fundamental level, the three families form multiplets which transform under family symmetry while their different masses that we observe today signify spontaneous family symmetry breaking at low energy.

16:35-16:50 Maria Eugenia Cabrera Catalan (IF-USP)
16:50-17:05

Boris Panes (IF-USP)

Title: Dark Matter and Neutrinos in the context of Multimessenger Analysis.

Abstract: In this talk we discuss some aspects of multimessenger analysis that can be useful to learn about dark matter and neutrinos. We start by explaining what we understand by multimessenger analysis and the natural realm where this tool is exploited. Then, we consider its connection to the study of beyond the standard model physics phenomena, such as dark matter and neutrinos. Finally, we put emphasis on the importance of standard sources of multimessenger signals and how to incorporate this information in future projects.

17:05-17:20 Gustavo Burdman (IF-USP)
17:20-17:35

Hugues Beauchesne (IF-USP)

Title: New physics at the TeV scale: Model building and phenomenology.

Abstract: My research focuses on Beyond the Standard Model physics at or near the TeV scale, both from a phenomenology and model building point of view. I am particularly interested in models that can potentially solve the (little) hierarchy problem. In this talk, I will review some of my past and current projects which include work on Supersymmetry, collider simulations, electroweak precision tests, Neutral Naturalness and solutions to the hierarchy problem in general.
