Artist of Indian Classical Music
Born in India in a traditional family of Kolkata. Graduated in Indian Classical music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti of Ilahabad with the diploma of Sangeet Pravakar at the age of 16. Later on specialized in various types of music - classical, folklorical, bhajan etc. - from the Rabindra Bharati University at Calcutta. Had lessons in classical music from Late Pandit Prasun Kumar Banerjee, an eminent representative of Patiala Gharana of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali. Also holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in history of the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Promoting Indian Music and Culture

Her work of promoting Indian music started in the 1980s at Recife, Brazil. In 1992 started to promote indian music regularly in São Paulo, Brazil and nearby cities. Presents indian classical and folk music along with devotional songs and mantras which are intimately related to indian culture.

Shows

Presents shows of Indian music (classical, folk, bhajan and mantras) solo and with musicians Marcus Santurys, Krucis, Maria de Lourdes, e Micaela Marcondes playing different instruments such as harmonium, tabla, sitar, santoor, tanpura and pakhoaj. Also presents music and dance performances with Indian classical dancers Andrea Prior (Kathak and Odissi) and Patricia Romano (Bharatnatyam, Kuchupudi, and Mohiniatyam). These performances of live music with classical dance is her speciality in Brazil. She is the singer and music director of the show Surya of Odissi dance performance by classical dancer Silvana Duarte.

Her presentations often were sponsored by the Consulate of India in São Paulo.

Music Lesson, Workshop and Recording

Presents lessons and workshops on Indian music and mantras to professional musicians and others interested in Indian culture. Presented many workshops and shows on Indian classical music in different institutes of esoteric study and schools of music and yoga in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte. Participated in the recording of various types of music, such as, jingles, sound tracks of films and theatres, and traditional Indian music. Presented and recorded music with the members of the famous Rock Groups Titãs (Tony Bellotto and Charles Gavin) and Sepultura (Andreas Kisser) for the sound track of the film Bellini e a Esfinge.

Discography

Ratnabali has been developing an important work on the fusion of Indian music with western music, especially Brazilian music, thus creating a very rich tune in World music. She is the vocalist of the track Spirit of the famous compilation CD Buddha Bar II (George V/Wagram, Paris) and track All is One of Geisha Lounge (Virgin, UK). She produced various CDs in Brazil and exterior, (1) Music of India (Lua Music, Brazil, 2008) (2) ANAND/SHIVA LOUNGE (Azul Music, Brazil, 2002/2005) [reprinted as ANARD by Pravzvuka, Russia (2004)]. Colaborações e consultorias

Ela prestou consultória para equipe da novela Caminho das Índias da Rede Globo. Administrou vários workshops de música e mantras e deu consultória na Rede Globo para produção desta novela. Sua música foi dublada pela personagem Rani. Nesta mesma novela Ratnabali também aparece cantando mantras.

Recent Presentations

Theater and stage

Since 1993 she has been presenting Indian music all over Brazil. She performed several times in different units of the SESC (Consolação, Ipiranga, Santo Amaro, Carmo, Bertioga, Vila Mariana, Santos, Presedente Prudente, Araraquara, Campina Grande, Fortaleza) and Inst. Moreira Salles of Unibanco (Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro), the Centro Cultural de São Paulo, MASP, ECA (USP), National Theatre of Brazil in Brasilia. She also presented in cities Fortaleza, Recife, Campina Grande, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Florianopolis, Poços de Caldas, Monte Verde, Ubatuba, São Sebastião. She also performed many different shows on her two visits to Buenos Aires (Argentina). On many occasions Ratnabali enthusiastically helped to organize and performed in cultural events of the Indian Consulate and Embassy of India, like Gandhi Jayanti, Independence day, Expo India, etc. On the invitation of the Ambassador of India, she presented with her group at the National Theatre of Brazil to celebrate the independence day of India. Since 1992 has been presenting music regularly at different units of SESC (Consolação, Ipiranga, Santo Amaro, Carmo, Vila Mariana, Pinheiros, Bertioga), Moreira Sales Institute of Unibanco (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Poço de calda), Centro Cultural of São Paulo, MASP, and ECA of USP. In 1993 and 1994 presented music at Pinacoteca museum of São Paulo, at FUNDART of Ubatuba, participated in `Viva Voz' project of SESC Consolação and `Música Erudita do Oriente' at SESC Ipiranga and `Música às Seis' of Centro Cultural de São Paulo. In 1995, presented at the School of Communications and Arts (USP), at the auditorium of MASP, and at Centro Cultural of São Paulo. In 1997, presented at the Municipal Theatre of São Carlos. In 1998 participated in the project Mundão of SESC Santo Amaro and in shows with the eminent ethnic group Mawaca at the theater of Instituto Cultural Itaú in São Paulo. In 1999, presented at Centro Cultural of São Paulo, SESC Vila Mariana and Consolação and participated in the Rathajatra festival at Avenida Paulista sponsored by Secretaria de Cultura de São Paulo. Also presented the show `Welcome to India' of classical Indian dance and music with dancers Patricia Romano and Andréa Prior at theater of AFRESP, at theater X and at theater Plínio Marcos with sponsorship of Indian Consulate at São Paulo. In 2000 presented at SESC Consolação and in 2001 at SESC Carmo and Bertioga and at theater Crown Plaza of São Paulo. Also in 2001 organized and participated in the cultural event EXPO-INDIA organized by Indian Consulate of São Paulo. In 2002 presented at Anchieta Theater of SESC Consolação the show India-Brasil Mangalam. This show was also presented at Rio de Janeiro, Parati and Brasilia always with the sponsorship of Indian Consulate of São Paulo. In 2003 presented the Show of musica and dannce `The path of peace' based on the work of the great poet Tagore with the classical dancer Andrea Prior and other musicians at theater Anchieta of SESC Consolação with sponsorship of the Indian Consulate at São Paulo. In 2004 presented shows of Indian music and dance at the Itaú Cultural Theatre of São Paulo with Patricia Romano of Natyalaya School and at Sesc Carmo with Andrea Prior.

Her work has been promoted by various Brazilian TV channels, such as, Globo network, Culture, Gazeta, Bandeirantes, Women's TV (TV Mulher), Canal 21, TV Comunitária, RedeTV, GNT and MTV.
